untitled1a (9935 bytes)1562 La Sacra Biblia
(The Holy Bible in Italian)

This is an original leaf (page) from 1562 La Sacra Biblia printed in Geneva Switzerland by Francesc Durone This Italian language translation of scriptures is typical of late 16th century printings of the Bible. Double columns of text are presented in the now-standard Roman type face, with commentary and side notes in smaller sized fonts. The present speciment is a good representative of the many translations of the Bible into the venacular, or common language of the people which appeared after the invention of printing. These new books were widely disseminated across the Christian world as a result of this dynamic technology and made Scriptures, heretofore accessible only to those educated in Latin, available to all those seeking the Truth of Gods Holy Word.
