I
APPENDIX B

For Further Reading
ANYONE SEEKING A TRUE UNDERSTANDING of the law and gospel
would do well to study the following passages from the letters
of the apostle Paul:
2 Corinthians 3:2—18 Romans 5:12—21
Galatians 2:14—21 Romans 6:14-18
Galatians 3:19—26 Romans 7
Galatians 4:1—7 Romans 10:4-9
Galatians 5:13—15 Romans 14:1—7
Romans 2:13-15 Ephesians 2:11—17
Romans 3:19—20 Colossians 2:11—17
Romans 3:31 1 Timothy 1:6—11
7 It would be beyond the scope of this book to address all of
these texts. But they receive careful exposition in Patrick Fair-
bairn’s The Revelation of Law in Scripture (reprint: Phillipsburg,
N.J.: P&R Publishing, 1996), 365-480.
Also beyond the scope of this book (and certainly beyond my
theological qualifications) is another closely related subject, the
covenants. That subject is so important in relation to the law

and the gospel that Spurgeon considered the covenant the mar-
I
row of divinity. (See also Appendix A: Calvin on the Covenant.)
Four books that I enthusiastically recommend as the best on
the subject of the covenants are:

1. Herman Witsius, The Economy of the Covenants Between
God and Man, 2 vols.

195

196 Appendix B

2. 0. Palmer Robertson, The Christ of the Covenants.
3. Francis Turretin, Institutes of Elenctic Theology, vol. 2.
4. Zacharias Ursinus, Commentary on the Heidelberg Cate-
chism.

Each of these four titles has been published or reissued by
P&R Publishing and may be purchased from them.
